Cape of Joy and bring on '12

A warm winter hello to you all,

I hope you are all wrapped up warm and thinking positively about the longer days and the onset of spring even if it is waay too cold right now. Now I know I have zero sympathy from many of you, as my unaccustomed skinny little legs rattle together in these freezing temps, due to having only just returned from Cape Town and its warmer weather but please do read on : )

First up I am happy to introduce my NEW Technique series, on the updated Boards Mag website, and entitled 'The Moves that Matter.' Please follow this series and forward / share it with as many people as we can so that everyone can get ripping and Jemetically Modified.

Not only has Antoine Albeau joined RRD International but he was also available last week on Tuesday at 11.30am for a live chat on the Boards website so please get involved.

RRD are also proud to announce that the legend Dave White has joined Seasprite sports to help promote and sell all our fine toys, check out his movie and thoughts about this right here

Next bit of news for you is that after the resounding success of my Brazil Combo clinic in 2011 we have just released the prices and details for 2012. Cape Town was fab, hard sailing and plenty of it and an opportunity for me to train, test and enjoy some time out. Once again Virgin Atlantic Airways were amazing, great flight and seats and such a fab sporting goods baggage policy - please consider them for a whole myriad of destinations. It was great to do comprehensive testing with John Skye, team mate and top chum, on some of our potential RRD joy toys and educate our new man Dave White on the comprehensive and current RRD goodness.

Sorry about the lack of action pics but it was not that sort of trip and thanks to Whitey for the pics and to Debbie Kennedy for the 'cheesy' sunset pic.

Windsurfing is always a very small world and it was great to see my old test team boss and mate, Ian Leonard, out in Cape Town and to enjoy some good sailing with him, the odd beer and experience his fine tennis coaching too.

Feb and early March see me rooted to my desk as I look to get some much needed office work done and to entice you fine people to book some clinics as well. I hope to see you on the water for a windsurf, when it warms up, and maybe on the south coast for a SUP when the swell comes in. The next trip for me is Marsa Alam, Egypt in March which, I believe, is now full -I offer a HUGE HUGE THANKS for booking.

In the meantime Spring is on the way and the 3 Fs will see you through the next season with both enjoyment and progression. Therefore, up your FITNESS, review and visualise what to FOCUS on and when you get in the water ensure your FUNDAMENTALS are ripping.

Nah, not really - However, Sophie and I and the team @ RRD / Ezzy would all like to wish you all a very Merry Xmas and a windy ripping 2012.

I am just back from my Brazil combo clinic which went very well. Expect to get a full run down right here in the new year and Dave White is working on the video and took loads of pics.

Mighty fine Mauritus

Damn my blogging has been pants, anyways I blame too much travelling and coaching. Summer was great to be at home and then it was perfect PSC, Baja in August, Rhodes in September and Mauritius after this .. which was fantastic with wind every day and a lovely crew of rippers who worked very hard.

Wow,
What a difference some winds makes, just had 3 great days sailing with friends and catching up with customers with everyone loving it. Whilst I was out in Reliable Rhodes, for June and and early July, it was fantastic to hear of windy reports from home as we also scored many great days over there too. This newsletter is just to say hi and that i will update you on Rhodes in the next one and that I will now inevitably inform you of the latest availability on my windsurf coaching clinics.

Ps If you fancy an amazing medium wind gybing machine and a breath of freemove / ride fresh air then please consider the RRD FireMove range, wide but thin depth and rails so it planes early, goes fast and gybes like a dream. Great test here and the stats in this test are wrong the 110 is 236 x 75cms and feels like 120 litres.

Magical Moulay

A beautiful day here in sunny Grosetto, Tuscany on the RRD conference. Their has been wind kicking around all week back in the UK and it was great to get some time out there after my 2 weeks of coaching in Moulay, Morocco. There is also some big wind forecast for the coming week which has got one and all licking their lips.

Moulay was damn fine with Lawamas being fantastic hosts and the conditions stepping up with the goods, giving us both riding and jumping pure deep joy. Week 1 went off and week 2 was a bit windless as even the most reliable places can go offline sometime, still the group charged hard on SUPs & surfboards and all saw the potential and would re book. I will do a full report on this soon.

RRD NEWS

The brand spanking new RRD wave cult contest is now in the country and in stock at 2XS so take a look and consider this fantastic all round quad fin wave board in a lighter construction.

Both Boards and Windsurf Magazines have been extolling the virtues of RRDs new FireStorm (fast freeride) boards and I got out on it for some Sarf coast testing this week. It is faster than the Fireride (classic freeride) and easier to sale than the blisteringly quick FireRace (free race) yet is comfy and gybes fantastically as our boards are well known for. I will be using it for coaching on my next clinic to Rhodes in June.

Lastly, if you wish to have an early planing board with a wide plan shape yet thin rails then look at the NEW RRD FireMove, which bridges the gap between our highly acclaimed FSW and Fireride boards, and is a Freemove board. It is great for planing early, top end speed and is super responsive for gybes and jumps, for a board of its size. It planes like a big board but sails like a smaller one for carving and popping, featuring a length of 236 and volumes of 100, 110 and 120 and corresponding widths of 69, 75 and 80 cms. I will be using the 100 as a coaching board for bump n jump, blasting, carving, old school freestyle and looping.

40th and upcoming events

A Happy Easter to you all. No doubt some time out soon beckons and if the wind does not show please consider getting your awesome waterperson physiques into and onto the water and doing some light wind fundamentals or freestyling and / or hiring / getting out stand up paddle boarding which can be hired in many places now : )

UPCOMING EVENTS:
The National Windsurf Week kicks off on May 1st. where we ask you to enthuse people to learn or continue to improve their windsurfing. There will be lots of free beginner and taster sessions all over the country as well as the Sunrise to Sunset W4CR (windsurf 4 cancer research).

This weekend is kicking off in style with the legendary Round Hayling event on Friday 22nd, this involves racing around as much of the Island as the wind and your ability permits and also a SUP race too.

Saturday and Sunday sees Hayling beach front host both the first slalom and freestyle competitions of the year where our rippers, Adam Sims and Connor Bainbridge and our new man Will Rogers will be strutting their stuff. There are also fleets for amateurs as well as pros.

BREAKING CLINIC NEWS:
My next UK coaching for Improvers and Intermediates is on May 19th at Blithfield reservoir through BOARDWISE on 01543 505084.

Cape Town training report

It has been a pretty hectic couple of months with lots of comings and goings as I have been to Cape Town and Austria so far this year. I got some good punishment and had a fantastic time on my snowboarding holiday with Sophie, who definitely enjoyed seeing me as an intermediate. Now that I have been home it has given me the chance to do some much needed office work including my ever so subtle marketing and sales to get you lovely people on my 2011 clinics. As promised I will now give you the report from, my winter training and testing venue, Cape Town.

I headed out to Cape Town in early Jan. with my great mate and training partner Tony Ford for my yearly dose of port tack pleasure and pain. Tony and I had last been here together back in ’04 when we scored some great wind. This was a good omen as we really got some great sailing in once again and enjoyed heaps of windy days with good swell. The last couple of years I have managed to get just enough sailing in by travelling around to be at the right spots at the right time armed with my local knowledge and the guidance of the oracle Phil Horrocks, Ben ‘party’ Proffit and Andrea ‘RRD tester’ Rosati. This year it was easier with a lot of the good conditions local to where we were staying, with Nick Coleman firstly and then Martin (centre manager in Rhodes) afterwards.

The sailing was just right in the first week with about 6 days in a row and plenty of time to get dialled in on port tack. At home I mainly sail starboard and a lot of my venues are starboard tack too, so I really seek to benefit from training on my opportunity to improve side. As you all know there are no weaknesses merely opportunities, and the only limits placed on us are the limits we place on ourselves. By the end of the 6^th day I was pretty much delirious as I staggered around the beach begging Tony not to make me sail again, and this was even with sailing focussed ‘hours of power’ fuelled by good food and hydration. Luckily a non-windy day came before we were back on...

With the second dose of wind the swell increased so we had to choose our beaches wisely. This coincided with RRD teammate, John Skye’s arrival along with his ripping fiancé Nayra. The head man and legend at RRD, Roberto Ricci, called a photo shoot at Scarborough point so we headed off there early doors the next day. I volunteered myself for video duty as I knew the RRD riders rarely get footage in these conditions and I knew they would have better sessions than me in the huge waves, gusty winds and constantly shifting peak. It is a true point break with a channel, of sorts, and huge chunks of ocean roaring in and breaking right off some gnarly rocks. Tony went out, true to form, following the rippers to be in the right spot and caught some good waves. When he eventually came in he was shattered from shaking so much in the nerve racking conditions and said that the memory of that day will stay with him for a long time! You can watch out for this footage on some new RRD videos and Skye boy’s next movies he will no doubt be making.

My trips to Cape Town really gave me the chance to get fully tuned and accustomed to as many of my RRD boards as possible and this time I really got to know all sizes of my CULT Qu4ds (92, 83 and 75) and my Hard Core Qu4d 84. I benefitted from the extra control, drive and grip that the quads bestowed upon me, as Cape Town can get damn windy, choppy and gnarly. Another benefit was the improved upwind performance the quads gave me allied to the security that I could really push into my jumps due to the boards reliability and grip. I have put quite a few people on quads now and heard from many happy owners who are regular weekend warriors and so I am really happy that they work for both improving wavesailors and rippers. Whilst in Cape Town I get a chance to get my coaching from the pro crew out there and this year I was working on improving my wave riding and push loops. The beauty of windsurfing is that we can always set new challenges, whether they’re conditions, equipment led or just plain old stunts and moves. On quite a few days Tony and I had a ‘push loop off’ - doing as many as possible without killing ourselves and we each exchanged wins on separate days. There is nothing like your mates and peers inspiring you to step up and make a new move and of course receiving focussed guidance from a great coach too, just like on a coaching clinic PLUG PLUG.

In all we had a great time and I took some big hits, broke a bit of kit, improved my sailing and survived my swims without getting eaten. After a trip like that I am fully charged for this year and my port tack improvements even showed on the last sessions I had on my 3.5 down on the South coast.

The last few weeks I have scored some great SUP action at the Witterings and Kimmeridge and am gagging for a few more big days with no wind to continue the momentum.

I am off to Marsa Alam next week and then have April in the UK for some more home ground ocean realignment and joyous office time. Wedding, honeymoon and Moulay clinic 'lite'

Good morning,

Well I hope that some of you got out on Sunday for a sail, as it was damn nice in the sun and sweet force 4 – 5. As promised I am going to give you a peak at our wedding photos and give you the lowdown on how the day went.

Firstly, of course, a bit of promotion as you know I’m not shy on this ….

Your last chances for a boost this year are:

My Re-scheduled clinic light trip to Moulay, Morocco where I am offering daily part time coaching at this amazing wave venue, which has side shore wind and sweet waves. Getting out, jumping, looping, catching waves and riding will all be covered, this place is very consistent! I will be there from July 19 – 26 and bookings are through Oceansource.net

Marvellous Mauritius is now getting steady bookings for this September. The clinic was bought forward to this date for more wind and waves and both the venue and hotel are world class, and you can now upgrade to the 5* Les Pavilions hotel should you so wish. I will be covering stance, better gybes, tacks, feasible freestyle, jumps, loops and wave riding. The venue has all water states from flat water to small waves to side off perfection and the hotel is great for non sailing partners and families.

I apologise for the pic heavy newsletter but I just got very excited about sharing them with you so please have a look through and enjoy them. People say getting married is the best day of your life and boy are they right. It was an amazing day with so many great people there to share it with. Sophie and I have to thank our awesome parents, and extended family for supporting us in putting it on.

It is quite a surreal experience, after the carnage of the stag weekend comes the realisation that you are about to fully commit and as we know this is what life is all about : ) My crew joined me the night before for a few drinks and we kicked off the next day with some lunges, squat thrusts and a jog, like you do. The morning was a bit of a blur and everyone was asking me, ‘are you nervous?’ which I was not but just excited beyond belief. The ceremony was great and Sophie looked absolutely stunning, and the registrar seemed to enjoy called me Jeromany Hall.

The wedding party then adjourned for plenty of fizzy and the obligatory photos before sitting down for dinner and then the dreaded speeches. Colin, my father in law went easy on me but Tony, my best man did not! Well, actually I will have to say that with all the pics and the great content it was, as many people have now told me, one of the best best mans speeches – ever. The first dance flew by and Sophie forgot our entire rehearsed synchronised freestyle dance routine. Now by this time everyone was pretty ‘refreshed’ so the dancing was starting to get pretty messy and there was a bit of rough and tumble. I can’t even count how many times I fell over. The DJs, Wedding smashers, were amazing and everyone danced the night away, enjoyed bundling me and even tested out the carpet for some dodgy break dancing.

The next day it was a yummy lunch at my parents in laws and then off to the Maldives for out honeymoon. Thanks to everyone for their kind donations to this and getting us there and to Sportif for organising it. We had a great honeymoon and no boardsports were partaken or work performed – the island was beautiful, food amazing and people friendly and we just loved the snorkelling.

After all those good times it was back to work which took me to the RRD conference in Tarifa where I got to check out what’s coming out soon, discuss our R and D plans and get out on some proposed shapes. The main intro for this year is out new wave boards in both Quad and Single fin and in the guise of the all-round master, the Cult and our riding master the Hard Core. I am very excited about the Quads as they give me the looseness of a twin with the grip of a single fin and with a bit more early planing and upwind ability thrown in for good measure. The Single fins are also updated and available for those of you who prefer them and want a grippier ride, even earlier planing or for stronger wind usage and occasional riding. Out in late July and I’ll send out some more pics then.

With this year selling out so quick I have been asked to release my 2011 dates earlier and I will be highlighting these in July including a new venue for March, which will be available for booking in July through Sportif.

A very good morning to you and a belated happy Easter. What a difference a bit of wind and sun makes and these longer nights are just fab hey.

This letter will urge you to book the last few places on clinics for the year, tell you the low down on my Cape Town and El Tur trips and inform of you what is coming up for the big bald yoda.

Cape of Joy:
Back in Jan/Feb I had my usual sojourn to Cape Town and it was amazing. Thanks to martin Sellars for being the co-pilot and wave brother as we covered alot of miles and sailed everywhere. I got my first sail at Elands Bay and also climbed up Lions head which scared the s**t out of me but probably inspired me to re-learn how to push loop.

It was great to hook up with Skyeboy and do some testing for RRD and of course hang out with Don Roberto Ricci himself. We were joined on many of the beaches by El Toro Clive Boden and Kyle McGinn who both put some video footage together on MPORA

EL TUR:
After a busy month or so in the office it was off to El Tur for my first clinic of the year and it was very international in feel. Thanks to my Austrian, 2 Dutch, 4 Irish and 6 British peops for making it such a fab week and for working so hard.

We had about 4 days of planing and 2 of light wind training which was perfect. First gybes were made, stances got faster but sorry boys the girls improved the most : )

FLICKS
Their are so many good movies on the old interweb now but for a bit of reflection check out John Skye's movies on Mpora and of course the loop movie that he and I made, and for added inspiration El Toro's loop story is pure class. If you are not gagging to loop after these then you never will be!!

EVENTS:
Not only do we have National windsurf week on May 1 - 9 but now we have World Windsurf week, so get involved and spread the love and joy of windsurfing far and wide please.

May also sees the start of the Uk wave comps and a new dawn has come with the BWA now in charge their has never been a better time to do your first amateur event. Its fun and you will learn loads and will it ever focus you!

We have the National Windsurf festival in September and I am proud to announce that I will be there so come down and have a chat and race a round a few buoys. Also throughout the year the BSA are having lots of slalom events and with a big focus on fun races and masterblasters, alongside this their are now lots of local slalom clubs so get involved as going fast never went out of fashion.

Well, I am now off to my stag weekend so wish me luck and if you see me in Wales somewhere naked and with no eyebrows do more than say 'bend your back leg.' My best man said 'no body gets out of here alive,' sounds ominous so I bid you Au revoir, hopefully. Sophie and I are getting married in May and we are very excited.

Before the wedding I will be in Mouthwatering Moulay for my first wave clinic there, cue wigs and Moroccan tea for our big night out.

Keep this coming and it is great to see so many new customers from all around the globe.

Merry Xmas and a very happy new year to you all. This is just a quick newsletter to keep you posted and say thanks to those of you who have supported me over the last year and to those of who have booked up for next year.

UK ACTION
wow - what a month November was, 3.5 to 4.7 weather on so many days and even windy at weekends - YAY! I was loving it, my Panthers and RRD wave twins were eating up the conditions and it was great to catch up with quite a few of you around the breaks.

BRAZIL BECKONS
Late November sees me jet off to Jeri, Brazil to get some pics and perform my now regular clinic there. This year Sophie joined me and for my sins, I took Dave White (Boards mag editor and all-round legend) along as my photographer, and it wa he spent alot of time ripping into both me and the clients and took some superb pics and also reflected on both Jeri itself and the clinic so please check out the links. I will cover more on Brazil in the next newsletter. The sail in the pics is the NEW Ezzy Panther 2 and it has all the usual Ezzy Panther attributes of stability, tuning flexibility, wind range and strength and is now also lighter and smoother thanks to the new white tri - laminate in the middle of the sail.

A very enthusiastic person has started a thread on my coaching on the Boards forum so if you fancy posting on there then that can be your pressie to me and perhaps take the time to reflect on some of your favorite quotes of mine on Facebook

Whilst it is cold you can still run, swim, bike and hit the gym and the fitter you are the quicker you will progress and the more you will enjoy your sessions. Those of you who have booked clinics please do be as fit as humanly possible for them and get your hands tough (surgical spirit application works).
